Campus resources for research in music

The UT libraries

Several libraries and special collections on the UT Austin campus support our Division's programs. Primary support comes from the excellent and extensive music collection in the Fine Arts Library, but among the major research resources are music and cultural materials in the Benson Latin American Collection (unmatched in North America), the Center for American History (especially music in Texas and the South), and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (HRC), UT's principal rare-books and manuscripts library that is one of the world's preeminent institutions for literary and cultural research. Music materials in HRC range from medieval liturgical manuscripts and early printed books all the way to major 20th-century archives of composers' holograph and autograph scores (such as Ravel, Dukas, and Roussel), manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, and even complete libraries. Also part of HRC are the Kraus Libretti Collection of 3800 opera libretti from 1600 to the 20th century, more than 600 first and early editions of works by 18th- and 19th-century composers, Alfred Cortot's collection of sacred vocal music publications from 1533 to the 20th century, and extensive primary source material on music in film and the theatre, both operatic and popular. Also on campus are substantial collections of Asian and Middle Eastern material. For additional information, see Collections of Music Materials in UT Libraries.

The Center for American Music

In the fall of 2001, the School of Music inaugurated the Center for American Music, which advances the teaching, scholarship, and performance of American music from all traditions, including concert, folk, and popular musics.

Latin American Music Review

UT Austin publishes a quarterly journal, the Latin American Music Review, which provides a forum for discussion and exploration of Latin American musics. Founded by Professor Gerard Béhague, who served as editor until his passing in 2005, LAMR is now edited by Professor Robin Moore.

Asian Music, the Journal of the Society for Asian Music

The leading journal for scholarship on the music of Asia is edited by Professor Stephen Slawek and published by the University of Texas Press. Asian Music features articles, book reviews, and reviews of audio-visual materials written by scholars from throughout the world.
