Suggested minimum program for the Ph.D. in Musicology

It is assumed that applicants to the Ph.D. program will have completed a master's degree in musicology or equivalent graduate work in musicology. Applicants without the master's in musicology or equivalent graduate work will automatically be considered for admission to the M.M. in Musicology.

There is no stipulated number of hours required, though 33 hours beyond the master's is considered typical; no more than 9 hours of independent study should be taken during the two years of coursework, including 6 hours suggested during the second year. (See also the Schedules of Work.)

If necessary, the musicology faculty may decide to supplement the basic program outlined below with additional coursework. The major requirement is the official advancement to candidacy, after the successful completion of qualifying doctoral examinations, and examination in two foreign languages.

A typical course work program would include the following:

One semester of MUS 394: Directed Reading may be taken, but students may take no more than 9 hours of independent study during the two years of coursework. One graduate seminar on issues of music theory/composition (MUS 688) may also be elected. Note that faculty may also offer specific course recommendations.

Musicology doctoral students are required to pass two language proficiency examinations. German is required; students must request the Musicology faculty's approval of their proposed second language as early as possible within their graduate curriculum but no later than the end of the second semester of study within the degree program. Additional language study may be necessary, depending on the focus of the student's research.

The first language requirement should ideally be fulfilled by the end of the second semester of residence. The second language requirement must be fulfilled before advancement to candidacy for the doctoral degree, and ideally by the end of the fourth semester of residence.

Students are required to pass a comprehensive examination before being advanced to candidacy.
