Ethnomusicology students are required to pass a language proficiency examination in one major world language (e.g. Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, etc.) relevant to the field of ethnomusicology and/or to the culture area of specialization of the M.M. Report, and approved by petition to the Division.

A comprehensive examination is required of all Master's degree candidates, usually in the final semester of coursework.
