Schedules of Work
The following schedules define “acceptable progress” toward the degrees of Master of Music in Musicology and the Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology. Failure to meet these expectations may prompt a meeting of the student, Division Head, and Director of Graduate Studies; a student’s standing in the program and/or level of financial support (whether fellowship or teaching appointment) may be adversely affected. These schedules supplement, but do not substitute for, any guidelines established by the School of Music, College of Fine Arts, or University of Texas Graduate School.

The Musicology faculty, in conjunction with the Director of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee, may define acceptable progress for individual students, specifying coursework to be completed for a degree or during a particular semester, with grade expectations, or requiring a program of work to be submitted and approved by the faculty.

Master's Degree | Doctoral Degree

Master's of Music in Musicology
Expected time to degree is 2 years. A total of 33 hours is required; specific course requirements are available in the Graduate Student Handbook, published by the Graduate Office in the School of Music.

Acceptable Progress
Students are expected to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in each semester and to meet the following benchmarks:

Within the first year students should
  • remedy any deficiencies
  • complete no fewer than 18 hours of course credit
  • pass one foreign language exam

Within the second year students should
First semester
  • choose a report advisor
Second semester
  • register for at least three hours of Master's Report work (MUS 398M)
  • sit for the master's exams
  • submit a progress report to the report committee by March 1
  • submit the completed master's report by April 15th

Ph.D. in Musicology
The time to degree varies; the School of Music will offer financial support to graduate students in the Ph.D. program for 3 years: 2 in coursework and 1 in candidacy. There is no required number of hours for the degree, though a total of 33 hours beyond the master's is considered typical. Faculty may suggest additional coursework, as deemed necessary. A student may only take 9 hours of independent study during the first two years of coursework, including the 6 hours suggested during the second year.

Acceptable Progress
Students are expected to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in each semester and to meet the following benchmarks:

Within the first year students should
  • pass at least one foreign language exam
  • have approval for the second foreign language

Within the second year students should
First semester
  • choose a thesis advisor
  • identify an exam committee
Second semester
  • pass the second foreign language exam
  • submit the prospectus to the dissertation committee
  • sit for the doctoral comprehensive exams
  • advance to candidacy
In the second year, students are strongly encouraged to register for two independent study courses (MUS 385J: Directed Research and MUS 394: Directed Reading) to prepare for the doctoral exams and write the dissertation prospectus.

Within the third year students should

  • register for at least 3 hours of dissertation work each semester (6 or 9 is advised)
  • submit at least one completed dissertation chapter to the thesis advisor
Beyond the third year of study, a student's thesis advisor will define "acceptable progress" according to his or her own standards and the established rules of the Graduate School. While in Candidacy all students are required to submit a progress report to the advisor by April 1 of each year, until the dissertation is submitted and defended.

Any student admitted to candidacy must complete the degree within 3 years from the date of admission to candidacy. Students who do not complete the degree within the 3-year time limit must request an extension. Continuous registration is required during the fall and spring semesters of each academic year until the degree is attained. See the School of Music Graduate Student Handbook for more information.
