Faculty Evaluations
At certain pre-determined intervals, the faculty or a subset of the faculty will
meet to assess a student's progress as measured by the established schedules of work,
the general impression of a student's strengths and weaknesses, his or her own progress
reports, and chances for continued success in the program. These evaluations represent
the consensus of the faculty and will be communicated to the student in writing.
Any time a student has failed to meet expectations as outlined in the schedule of work, the
faculty may choose to issue a formal evaluation.
Master's of Music in Musicology
First Year Review
Admission to the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin does
not necessarily constitute admission to a master's degree program in music.
Before a student is officially admitted to the master's degree program, three faculty
members will be assigned to evaluate each student during the first full year of study.
Faculty will review a student's performance, determine his or her potential for success,
and perhaps offer pertinent recommendations for subsequent coursework. If appropriate,
this review will result in official admission to the master's degree program. Letters
will be approved by the full musicology faculty and sent to students by the ninth week of the
second semester in the first year.
Student Report on Progress
Students must submit a progress report to the advisor and co-advisor of their master's report
by March 1st of the second year.
If, for any reason, the master's report is not completed by the end of the second
year of study, the student must petition the faculty for an extension. The student
will receive a written decision prepared by the report committee and approved by the
full faculty.
Ph.D. in Musicology
First Year Review
Admission to the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin does not
necessarily consitute admission to a particular doctoral degree program in music.
Before a student is officially admitted to the doctoral degree program, three faculty
members will be assigned to evaluate each student during the first full year of study.
Faculty will review a student's performance, determine his or her potential for success,
and perhaps offer pertinent recommendations for subsequent coursework. If appropriate,
this review will result in official admission to the degree program. Letters will be
approved by the full faculty and sent to students by the ninth week of the second semester
in the first year.
Student Report on Progress
Each year, those students in candidacy for the Ph.D. who have not yet submitted
the dissertation will be required to submit a progress report to their degree committees.
Should individual faculty members express concern about a student's progress, the full faculty
may offer a collective assessment.
